Love this song. Probably my favorite off of S/T.
The emotion and the whole song is just unparalleled.
I do love how the whole track sounds underwater - even the vocals have a watery tremolo/chorus effect on them.
Really cool tidbit from 3eb.com...
Hey Everyone! In "The Background", does anyone know the cross streets that SJ was talking about when he said "i walk haight street to the store...". I thought it would be cool to visit sometime, but i wasnt sure if it was a specific cross street that he had in mind.
Thanks!and, here it is:Originally Posted by stephan jenkins

In Hornby's new novel, Juliet Naked, the fan walks the journey of the artist writing his first album. Surprisingly, he ventured to San Fransisco.
SJ's ride? Haha.
I love this song and Tony to death, but I wish I could have seen it performed by KC. I've seen some shitty clips of him playing it live on youtube and I think having heard it in person would have been mind bending.
Drifting's made a big impression
Changed the focus, changed the goal
It's less and less about our reasons
It's more about losing control

I've always loved this track it prortrays such an overwhelming sense of loss that he can't escape.
That line makes me think that no matter what he does, or whatever he tries to think, the thoughts of her come swimming back into his consciousness, and all of a sudden she's all that matters, all that there is in his world, and the music blooms right as he says this to match his overwhelming feeling of love for her, and then dies back down when he realises that 'he's way in the background', in that he means nothing to her anymore, that he's just occupying the back of her mind.Cause you come swimmin' into view
And I'm hanging on your words like I always used to do
He's meaningless to her now, whereas she's everything to him.
I consider this to be the most emotional song from 3eb. You can really here the sincerity in Stephan's voice (something that is absent in pretty much all of UM).

"Music is what feelings sound like"
i fuckin LOVE the outro to this song. the pokipsee boot thru nice headphones is the shit.
i really wish this was more of a staple in their live show. it was cool on the couch, but this song needs distored guitar IMO
Last night, just sitting in my car, this song playing..and the emotional wonder has hit me before, but this time, my gosh. This song is incredible.

It plays so well, and so beautifully.
